The dream of having a home library is one that many of us harbor. Having a quite place of your own to read and relax with your books may be something that you have thought about for years. Of course, having a room that you can devote to a library might be a lot to ask. That’s why this idea is so divine.
If you live in a normal sized home, you might have to limit your project in size but this might actually work out better in the long run. Even if you do have a whole room that you can devote to this project, it would be selfish for you to take over a whole room for your library. Your spouse or partner might have other ideas or interests so a compromise might be in order. Also, it’s not likely that your book collection could fill an entire room so think about finding a smaller, more cozy space for your home library.
Finding the perfect spot in your home for your library should be your first step. Ultimately, you should be looking for an out of the way corner of a room or a spot with a window with a good view for your project. Most homes have a room or two with some dead space that needs something special. Write down which spots you could use and then draw out your plans for the most likely spaces. Talk about your plans with your spouse and get their thoughts on each spot.
Once you decide on a location for your new home library, measure the space and begin making plans for your remodeling project. Usually, a rough draft is required first and then deciding upon the height of shelves comes next. Keep in mind that you may wind up with some books that are taller than others. Of course, you might wish to make all your shelved the same height to maintain the uniform look of your library.
Once you start looking at building materials you need to realize that all the wood involved in building your library doesn’t have to be antique mahogany. The bulk of your lumber can be clear pine or similar material. Save the high end wood for what will be seen such as the front facing pieces and trim work. You can even buy different moldings to trim out your library and make it look quite fancy.
Think everything through and remember that you’re probably going to want to spend part of the project budget on things other than wood. Perhaps a nice leather chair or a new floor lamp to light your reading area would be nice. Maybe you’d like to invest in some new books to flesh out your library or a footstool to really kick back and relax when your job is complete. Don’t forget about finding that perfect blanket for cold winter nights and soft pillows for your window seat.
You see, your dream library doesn’t have to be a dream. With a little planning, some understanding from your partner and a little work you can have the library of your dreams. It doesn’t have to encompass an entire room to begin with. You can start out small and gradually take over the room. Don’t tell you partner about your plan for room domination. That’s a secret between us. Now, get to work planning that library home remodeling project of your dreams.
