How To Start An Afterschool Care Program

0 commentaires

In today’s difficult economy many parents have to work full time jobs. This can often leave them scrambling for good reliable child care. Most school children are out by three o’clock and many have several hours of unsupervised time before their parents get home. With this in mind many communities are wondering how to start an afterschool care program.

Once they decide to start programs the organizers need to really sit down together and ask some serious questions. They need to have a place to hold the programs that is safe and offers enough room. They need to find teachers and assistants who are responsible and well qualified. One of the biggest challenges facing any organization is funding. They will have to rely on grants, donations, fund raising and other sources to provide the necessary funds.

One of the most important components of good programs is flexibility. They hours and attendance should be on an as needed basis. The children may not need to attend every day, but only when their parents are at work. The hours and activities provided should also be flexible enough to meet all needs. There should be a mixture of sports and games, crafts, classes and educational activities.

The organizers will also have to deal with the many legal aspects of setting up the new programs. They will have to consult with an experienced attorney and finding someone in the community who is willing to donate their time is a huge asset. Many people within the community have skills and talents they can offer. For example, an accountant can help with the books, whilst a local grocery store may be willing to donate drinks and snacks.

Securing the necessary funds to get the programs up and running is a huge factor that can also prove the most difficult. The organization team should have a finance expert on board to help them set up all their facts and figures. They need to account for the major expanses which are typically wages for the staff and insurance. They will also need to know how many staff they will need for the number of children attending.

Most parents are only to happy to make suggestions. Most groups will print up specific sheets that parents can fill out. These will allow the families to say which activities they are most interested in. Many people want some type of sports and physical activity to help keep their children in shape.

Most programs will have to devote time to fund raising. Having a core group of dedicated parents to help out is essential. This is another way that families can come together to support each other and their community. There are many fun things to do ranging from a car wash to a walkathon.

Learning how to start an afterschool care program takes a lot of time, effort and energy. However the results are usually so rewarding that many people find themselves getting more and more involved. They are only too happy to volunteer their time to help make it a success.
