Get Off My Property: Discouraging Thieves From Targeting Your Home

0 commentaires

There’s nowhere in the world you can live where you can be absolutely certain that crime won’t be an issue. Break-ins and burglaries are a concern of most peoples’, and there are plenty of methods and systems to deal with intruders. But the best defense against burglars is to prevent them from coming to your home at all. Conveying a clear message to a thief that your home is protected is best way to keep him from targeting you at all. What are some ways to do this?

Alarm System: The most conventional of the options discussed here is the burglar alarm. There are a large number of systems available, and it’s recommended that you examine the pros and cons of each one before deciding on a setup, but once installed, most of them will be prominently displayed with a sign or sticker outside the house. Simply seeing that the home has additional security is a turn-off for most burglars.

On most of these systems, you just input the code into the control panel on your way out or in. Depending on the system you have, when the system is armed, an alarm will go off when motion sensors are triggered or a window or door is breached.

Well-Lit Exterior: Thieves like the dark. They want to stay inconspicuous when they intrude into a home. Proper use of lighting can keep their number of hiding spaces and concealed entry points to a minimum. Most outdoor lights function on motion sensors, lighting up when they detect movement. The windows on the second story of your home isn’t as appealing of a target when they’re lit up, and trying to gain entry through it would expose the burglar to neighbors.

Canine Security: There’s a reason that guard dogs have been in use for centuries: they’re very effective at what they do. Most thieves won’t even consider breaking into a house with a dog trained to call out and/or attack intruders.

Caring for any animal is a big responsibility, and dogs aren’t for everyone. But if you’re willing to put in the time and effort to train and care for it, a guard dog can be invaluable in protecting your home. At the very least, it will warn you when someone is approaching or inside your house, and many breeds will leap into action to attack intruders. Be sure to give the dog a steady supply of food and water, since he’ll be guarding when your away, and access to the backyard is best as well, both so he can relieve himself and deal with intruders who try to sneak in from the back

Thieves are opportunists, and most aren’t looking for a challenge. Making sure they know that your home won’t be an easy target is the best way to keep them away.
