While it is true that many companies are legitimate and safe to do business with, it is also true that there are quite a few companies out there that are not to be trusted. Surely it is one of the things that buyers dread the most-being taken in by a criminal through a business scam. But the sad truth is that lots of consumers lose money to those pretending to be real and trustworthy businesses.

There is no category of company that is immune to having impostors within their ranks, and this even includes home security companies. In fact, becoming the victim of a home security company scam may be one of the worst scams of all. This is because when you contract with a home security company, they have access to your home!

You will be glad to learn, however, that the Federal Trade Commission has rules that will help you make wise decisions when it comes to avoiding being the next victim of a home security company scam. If someone tries to sell you a home security system, you can do much to keep yourself safe and keep crooks from having access to your home.

The Federal Trade Commission thinks that one of the first steps you should take when confronted with someone offering to sell you a home security system is to make sure they have identification that proves they are who they say they are. You should not let them into your house until you have call the company they are representing and make sure they are truly employed by them.

Some things to watch out for are the ways that scammers often try to get people to buy from them. They may use hard and aggressive selling positions. They may also try to get you to feel the urgency of the deal by telling you it is only good for a limited time. Fear is also a way they could try to convince you to buy. They may tell you that crime is up in your subdivision. If these things happen, be careful. It could be a scam.

In addition, a scammer may attempt to get you to pay them money for an upgrade to your existing security system. They may tell you that it is out of date or that your own security company is out of business and they can replace your company. Make certain that you call your security business to check these things out before you hand over money.
