Fredericksburg: The Perfect Town For History Buffs

0 commentaires

Many people love nothing better than to visit historic sites and tour historic areas, and if that is one of your favorite hobbies, you also might consider living in an area filled with interesting history. Fredericksburg, Texas, for example, dates back to before the Civil War and many historic buildings have been well preserved.

Fredericksburg is a unique community that was founded by German immigrants back in the 1840s and was named in honor of Prince Frederick of Prussia. For many decades, these immigrants spoke only German, even in the local schools, and this practice continued until the early 20th century when the state required schools to teach only English. The language eventually evolved into an interesting hybrid of German and English, known as Texas German. These days, very few residents still speak using this dialect.

The downtown district of Fredericksburg contains hundreds of historic buildings and structures and this whole district is part of the National Register of Historic Places. You can take a leisurely walking tour which includes 30 different historic buildings. You will walk by historic saloons, the old town jail, the old county courthouse, a historic Catholic church and many private homes that once belonged to prominent locals. The historic Nimitz Hotel is a highlight of the tour.

The Nimitz Hotel has been transformed from a lodging establishment into a museum honoring the life and career of Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who was the commander of the Pacific Fleet during World War II. He was born and raised in Fredericksburg, and his grandfather built the hotel, which is now the Admiral Nimitz Museum. The six-acre property also features the National Museum of the Pacific War, which is an excellent museum for anyone interested in the history of World War II.

If you enjoy touring the homes of U.S. Presidents, it might interest you to note that President Lyndon Johnson was born near Fredericksburg in the tiny hamlet of Stonewall. His birthplace, boyhood home and first school all have been preserved and are incorporated into the Lyndon B. Johnson National Historic Park. The park has two halves, several miles from one another. One contains a settlement of log cabins where President Johnson’s grandparents lived, as well as his boyhood home. The other portion contains his sprawling ranch home, known as the Texas White House, as well as the home where he was born and the first school he attended.
