Beginner’s Guide To Seamless Drywall Repair

0 commentaires

Drywall is not the most durable material for covering walls and ceilings. That is why repairing drywall is an inevitable task for every homeowner. To master this skill like an expert, a lot of practice and patience are necessary. Achieve a flawless and seamless drywall repair by following the tips listed below.

With a sharp razor knife, remove the damaged panel by cutting a square around the hole. Do not follow the shape of the hole since this can be difficult to repair in the process. Remove the torn edges around the hole to make it easy to flush the panel.

Use a backer board for added support and slip it inside the hole. This will serve as a surface to anchor the new drywall panel. If the backer board doesn’t fit, you can enlarge the hole a bit more. You may need to attach a screw to the board for you to have something to hold on while you install the backer board.

Install the backer board by countersinking the screws on the corners. Measure the hole and cut a piece of drywall to fit it inside the damaged area. You can use drywall screws to attach it to the backer board. Make sure the nail heads are below the surface to avoid applying multiple layers of joint compound.

For beginners, it is best to use mesh tapes since they are easier to use than paper tapes. Conceal the seams with the mesh tape and apply a layer of drywall mud to cover the tape pieces. Use a taping knife to squeeze the excess compound and eliminate air pockets at the same time.

There is no need to apply a second coating if the panel is already flushed with your existing drywall. For beginners, apply another layer of drywall mud as a finishing coat and lightly sand the surface area. This is important if you want to achieve a seamless repair.

Once the top coat has dried, remove the remaining imperfections by lightly sanding the area for the second time. Apply primer once the surface is smooth and even. Do not take this lightly since primer prevents the compound from drying up the paint. Use a paint roller to make it easier to texturize the drywall panel.

At this point, the hole should already be covered up, as if nothing happened. However, do not hesitate to contact a specialist if you are uncomfortable in carrying out repairs on your own. Observe how the experts do it to learn a few tips and tricks to achieve a successful drywall repair.
