Protecting Your Mail From Thieves

0 commentaires

Most people are determined to defend their homes from burglars, intruders and identity thieves, as they should be. They may have the latest home security setups and internet safety measures. But there’s an area that practically every home has that serves as a conduit for all manner of personal information to pass through on a daily basis. That area is the mailbox. Most standard mailboxes offer nothing in the way of security, making them a prime target for people who want to misuse your personal information.

Any home security setup would do well not the neglect the mailbox. A thief doesn’t need much information to start causing harm. If they know the mail delivery routes and schedules in your area, they could simply walk up to your unsecured box and take whatever looks juicy before you have a chance to retrieve your items. If they get information about your credit cards or insurance, there’s a lot things they could take advantage of.

The mailboxes that come standard with many homes are worthless security-wise. All they do is keep your mail from blowing away. Communities with cluster mailboxes often come with locks, but private boxes are usually just a hollow tube with a door. If this doesn’t sit right with you, there are options out there that offer increased security.

An ideally secure mailbox should be made of durable, tamper-resistant materials, be firmly placed into the ground, and have a slot at the top that items can easily be placed through. But the side where mail is accessed and removed should only be able to be accessed by key.

You can find a quality, secure mailbox at a number of hardware or online stores. You can get a decent one for an affordable price, and you’ll agree that protecting the information of yourself and your loved ones is very much worth the cost. Thieves are constantly looking for a chink in the armor when it comes to home security. Don’t let your mailbox be the weakest area in your defenses.
